What to do when your work is stolen

It’s bound to happen sometime. You spend hours creating the perfect theme or plugin. You work through the night testing it, making sure its perfect and excitedly you publish it at as your own. The next day you discover 3 other sites claiming it as theirs and not giving you credit. What do you do?

5 ways to secure your WordPress blog

Lets face it, hackers are everywhere. Its an ongoing struggle to stay one step ahead from spam, spyware and malicious scripts. WordPress is pretty secure out of the box but here are a few tips to take it to the next level.

Use a stronger password. I know, I know, its easy to remember a 4 character password like abcd but its not very secure. Ideal passwords are 7 or more characters with a combination of numbers and upper/lower case letters. Example: woRdPr3ssRocKs!

Place an empty “index.html” file in your plugins folder. Doing this will prevent any would be hacker from viewing the contents of your plugins folder. A lot of the attacks on WordPress sites happen through out of date plugins.

Prevent brute force attacks. Hackers will use what is known as a brute force attack to obtain your admin login ID and password. There is a great plugin called Login LockDown by Michael VanDeMar that helps prevent this. The plugin will automatically ban a specific IP address if they have a set number of failed login attempts. Download it here

Change your administrator login name. The default login name is admin. Why not make it more difficult for a hacker to crack it by changing it to something else?

Do a regular security scan. Another good plugin for WordPress is WP Security Scan. This plugin will scan your Word Press installation for security vulnerabilities and suggest corrective action.

I know I said this list was only 5 ways to secure your blog. Consider this one a bonus

BACKUP YOUR DATA! No matter how secure your site may be, you still want to prepare for the worst. Install the wp-database-backup plugin and schedule it to backup your database daily.

I guess its only polite to start with introductions. Go ahead, I’ll wait while you tell me about yourself.

Well, if you know anything at all about WordPress you’ve already figured out my name is Chris. For the non observant among you, its plainly written at the top of this post, “Posted on June 12, 2009 by Chris”

Rockin’ WordPress will feature WordPress themes that I like, plugins I use, general Word Press tips along with reviews of different sites using WordPress.
